Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause serious lung infections, especially in older adults and people with weakened immune systems, including those without a functioning spleen. A single RSV vaccine dose gives strong protection.
Who should get the RSV vaccine?
Adults aged 50+ with conditions that weaken the immune system, including asplenia. Unfortunately, it is not free for everyone and would cost around $300 per dose.
Who can get the free RSV vaccine?
The government has invested in making the RSV vaccine Arexvy® free under the National Immunisation Program.
The RSV vaccination is free for:
- Pregnant women (to protect their newborns)
- Australians aged 75 and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 and over.
You can get the free vaccine at GPs, immunisation clinics, community and Aboriginal health services, and participating pharmacies.
Timing is important
Only one dose is needed. It can be given any time of year, but it’s best to get it before RSV the season, which runs from April to September.
This new program sits alongside the free flu and COVID 19 vaccines for older adults.
