Spleen Australia

Lifestyle and wellbeing

Living without a functioning spleen does not stop you from living a full, healthy and active life.

Along with staying up to date with vaccinations and following your doctor's advice, there are a few everyday health habits that can help support your wellbeing and reduce your risk of infection.

Eating well

You do not need to avoid any particular foods when living without a functioning spleen. However, eating a balanced diet can help support your immune system and overall health.

Aim to include a variety of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. Drinking plenty of water, limiting highly processed foods and maintaining a healthy weight can also contribute to better health.

If you have other medical conditions or dietary requirements, talk to your doctor or an accredited practising dietitian about the best diet for you.

Looking after your dental health

Good oral health is important for everyone, but especially for people at increased risk of infection. Gum disease, tooth infections and poor oral hygiene can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and may lead to serious illness.

Brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and visit your dentist for routine check-ups and cleans. If you are having a dental procedure, make sure your dentist knows that you do not have a functioning spleen.

In some situations, your healthcare team may recommend specific precautions.

Tattoos and body piercings

Tattoos and body piercings can increase the risk of infection if proper hygiene practices are not followed.

If you choose to get a tattoo or piercing, always use a licensed and reputable provider that follows strict infection control procedures and uses sterile equipment.

Seek medical advice promptly if you have any concerns.

Carefully follow all aftercare instructions and watch for signs of infection such as...

Redness
Swelling
Pain
Discharge
Fever

Taking care of yourself

Alongside vaccinations, medical reviews and infection prevention measures, looking after your general wellbeing is important. Eating well, maintaining good dental health, exercising regularly and making informed choices about tattoos and piercings can all help you stay healthy and reduce your risk of complications.
